On 13 January 2023, Ambassador Watanabe visited Uwak, East Sepik Province, and laid a wreath and offered a moment of silence at the Japanese memorial monument with Governor Bird of East Sepik Province and Australian Prime Minister Albanese, who was visiting PNG from January 12 to 13.
