A Message from Ambassador Morio Matsumoto
2016/2/9
It has been 1 year and 5 months since my arrival in PNG as the Ambassador
Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Papua New Guinea. In such a commemorative year, there were many activities to further promote exchange between our two countries. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Peter O’Neill had a summit meeting twice and agreed upon on further strengthening of bilateral relationship. In the economic filed, the Governments of Japan and PNG held the first meeting of Joint Committee under the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, and signed on the Agreement on Technical Cooperation. People in both countries also promoted the mutual understanding through participation in many cultural events.
While Japan extends its assistance to PNG, it is my hope to further strengthen our excellent relations in the year 2016. Based upon our cooperation, a Japanese drama series has been and will be on air at major TV stations in PNG since this January. I also understand that there will be another direct flight between PNG and Japan, which will make 2 direct flights a week starting this coming July. Also as PNG will host the APEC in 2018, the preparation will be highlighted and the international attention to PNG will be drawn more. With advancing our bilateral partnership, it is expected to further strengthen the relations between our two countries this year. To achieve such an objective, I would like to get your continued support and cooperation.
I am looking forward to seeing you in the near future.
