Groundbreaking ceremony of the Ramu Transmission System Reinforcement Project

On Wednesday, 13 March, Ambassador Nakajima joined the groundbreaking ceremony together with Hon. Sam Basil, Minister for Communication, Information and Technology and Energy for the Ramu Transmission System Reinforcement Project held at the PNG Power Substation construction site at Singsing Creek, Markham District, Morobe Province.
 
Besides Energy Minister Sam Basil, the ceremony was attended by Hon. Koni Iguan, Member for Markham Open, Hon. Renbo Paita, Member for Finschafen Open, Mr Joe Kapa, Deputy Secretary of Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Mr Peter Nupiri, Board Chairman of Papua New Guinea Power Ltd., Mr Takashi Toyama, Chief Representative of JICA PNG Office, and many other stakeholders. More than 1,000 locals enthusiastically welcomed the party of attendants.
 
In his speech, Energy Minister Basil said that the project would greatly improve the life of people and industries in Morobe Province, and expressed his gratitude for the Government of Japan for providing this significant assistance and other various assistances in Papua New Guinea.
 
Ambassador Nakajima said in his speech that the project would not only contribute to the improvement of living standards of Lae and surrounding areas, but also to the development of Lae, the largest economic hub in PNG, which will boost the national economy of Papua New Guinea as well. He also said that the project would play an important role in implementation of the PNG Electrification Partnership that was signed during the AEPC Meeting in November 2018 among the leaders of PNG, Japan, Australia, US and New Zealand.
