On 17 October, a ceremony was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Japan's ODA to Papua New Guinea. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister James Marape, Minister of Foreign Affairs Justin Tkatchenko, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Jelta Wong, and other ministers, members of parliament, senior officials of relevant departments, and other donor countries, agencies, and Japanese companies operating in PNG.
Ambassador Watanabe said, "Japan has been steady providing economic cooperation to PNG for the past 50 years. Today's 50th anniversary of economic cooperation is a milestone and an occasion for celebration, at the same time, I regard it as a good opportunity to further develop such economic cooperation between our two countries for the next 50 years." Prime Minister Marape said, "Japan's support without asking for anything in return is sincere, and Japan is a genuine friend."
