On 14th August, 2024, Ambassador Watanabe attended the handover ceremony of the Project for expansion of Semedagoda Primary School in Central Province. The Japanese government provided a school building with double classrooms, a teachers preparation room and furniture installation with the amount of approximately 197,500 kina.
On this occasion Ambassador stated, “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to stakeholders involved for their support and efforts put in for the successful completion of this project. The 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) was held in Japan in July. We invited the leaders of Pacific Island countries including Prime Minister Marape. On that occasion, a bilateral summit was held between Prime Minister Marape and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida. The two leaders renewed their understanding of the development of the relationship between the two countries. Given this background, it is significant that today's handover ceremony of the school building, under Japan's cooperation, is a symbol of the relationship between Japan and PNG.”
Attending the ceremony was also the local member of parliament, member for Hiri-Koiari,    Hon. Kieth Iduhu. In his remarks, he said, “We are pleased with the completion of this project. In this occasion, I would like to commend Japanese Government for its continuous support to the people of Papua New Guinea and in Hiri-Koiari district Central Province. I express my gratitude for the support Japan has provided us, and also look forward to further strengthening the cooperation and support in the future.”
