On 26-27 July, 2023, the celebrations of New Ireland Day of the year were held in Kavieng, New Ireland Province. Ambassador Watanabe was invited by Rt. Hon. Sir Julius Chan, Governor of the Province, and attended the celebrations with Mr. Toroama, President of Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
Tribes from many places of the Province demonstrated their songs and dances in the event. In addition, as a surprising gift, the students of a local high school sang the Japanese national anthem.
