On 10 July 2023, Ambassador Watanabe attended the commencement ceremony of capacity building support for the PNG Military Band by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band held at the Murray Barracks in Port Moresby.
In his remarks, Ambassador Watanabe noted that PNG has become a geopolitically important country, partly due to the growing interest in the Pacific region in the international community, and expressed hope for continue deepening its ties with PNG in the field of defense.
