On 8th February, 2023, Ambassador Watanabe attended a ceremony to hand over a school building (4 classrooms and two teachers' rooms) to Wabag Primary School in Enga together with Governor Sir Peter Ipatas. The building was built through a scheme of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Ambassador stated, “Education is not only a vital tool to acquire knowledge and skills but also an investment for the future. Through this project, the Government of Japan is pleased to continue to support the PNG Government’s efforts to improve the education sector”.

In addition, Ambassador Watanabe explained to Governor Ipatas mathematics and science textbooks printed and distributed through a scheme of Economic and Social Development Program. Japan developed textbooks and teachers’ manuals of mathematics and science for grades 3 to 6 jointly with the Department of Education of PNG, and printed and distributed 1,840,000 textbooks along with 80,000 teacher manuals to nationwide. About 100,000 textbooks and about 4,000 teachers' manuals have been distributed to the Enga Province.

This event was carried out as a part of "the press tour" under which journalists from a total of four newspaper and TV station companies joined some ceremonies and site visits attended by Ambassador Watanabe. Using the opportunity, the journalists interviewed school teachers, students and people of Wabag who attended the ceremony.
