On 19th August, 2022, Ambassador Watanabe attended the handover ceremony for the Project for expansion of St. Joseph Ruango Primary School at Kimbe in West New Britain Province. The Japanese government provided the school with one two-storey building with 4 classrooms, 2 teachers waiting rooms, 96 desks and chairs, and 2 water tanks amounting to approximately 295,000 kina.

Ambassador Watanabe stated that, “Education is not only a vital tool to acquire knowledge and skills but is also an investment for the future development. Through this project, the Government of Japan is pleased to support the PNG’s efforts to improve the education sector. I sincerely hope that these projects will contribute towards strengthening the friendship between the people of Japan and PNG, and will also contribute towards fostering a partnership between the two countries.”

In response, Hon. Sasindran Muthuvel, Governor of West New Britain Province, the guest of honor, said, “Japan has been supporting us not only with large infrastructure projects such as bridge construction, but also education through the construction of school buildings at the grassroots level such as this. Education is the master key to solving many issues. Money and goods can be lost or destroyed, but the knowledge and wisdom learned will remain with us forever. That is why education is so important.”
