The Nadzab airport redevelopment project, which is located outside of Lae city in Morobe province, is deemed a response to growing demand of economic activities and movement of people around Papua New Guinea. This K692 million project is a collaboration between Japan and PNG, partly funded by JPY26, 942 million loan, which is equivalent to K578 million.

The main purpose of the project was to improve PNG’s economy and broaden internationalization. One of the main concepts of this project is to transfer technology and techniques of construction, and ideas of management to National Airports Corporation (NAC) and the people of PNG. This concept has allowed students of PNG University of Technology to have tour visits to the construction site or to engage the construction as trainees.

On 5 April, 2022, Ambassador Watanabe visited the site as part of his first official visit to Lae, and received explanation about progress of the construction.
