On 30 March, Ambassador Watanabe attended a launching ceremony of the Rural On-Grid Extension Project in Central Province funded by New Zealand as one of partners of the PNG Electrification Partnership (PEP). The ceremony was held at Kamali Primary School, Hula, Rigo district, Central Province. Hon. The Project successfully constructed approximately 86km of new medium voltage distribution lines and connected about 5,600 rural households, including schools and health clinics.
Ambassador Watanabe said "Recently, Japan supported to construct school buildings and provide equipment for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Central Province. Last month, Japan committed support for a hydro power plant update as part of cooperation under PEP, which aims to achieve 70% coverage of electrification in PNG by 2030. I am sure that the project supported by New Zealand as a PEP partner has contributed to social, cultural, educational and environmental improvement in this region."
