Handover Ceremony of hygiene facilities funded by Japan (WASH Project by UNICEF)

On 24th March, 2022, Ambassador Watanabe officiated in a ceremony to hand over hygiene facilities to the people of Boregaina village, Rigo District, Central Province. Japan funded the WASH Project by UNICEF, and provided two large water tanks, a water well and water pump with solar system. Also, Japan provided 8 toilets, 8 water taps and one middle size water tank to Boregaina Primary school.
A representative of UNICEF and officers of the local government stated that "by the support of Japan, we could dug the well and install the water tanks in 25 villages in Central Province", and "about 4,200 inhabitants of Boregaina village are benefitted with this project". Also, they stated that "previously, villagers had to go to a river which is 3.5 kilometers away to draw water and came back". There was an another remarks by a student by the school that " thanks to Japan and UNICEF, now we know why we have to wash our hands and why we have to use toilet paper".
Ambassador stated, "Through this project, the Government of Japan is pleased to support the PNG's efforts to improve the health sector. I am also happy to witness a big change in the lives of the people of this village".
This event was carried out as a part of "the press tour" under which journalists from a total of four newspaper and TV station companies joined the several ceremonies and site visits attended by Ambassador Watanabe. Using the opportunity, the journalists interviewed villagers, students and staff of UNICEF who attended the ceremony.
