On 23 March 2022, Ambassador Watanabe attended a hand-over ceremony together with Mr. Bernard Kull, First Assistant Secretary of the Department of Works and Highways (DOWH), of the road construction equipment which the Japanese Government provided in Madang, Madang Province. The equipment is worth 300 million yen or approximately 10 million kina, and has been provided under the “Project for Economic and Social Development Program”. The road construction equipment which Japanese government handed over in Madang this time is an excavator, a vibration roller, a motor grader and a wheel loader, that will be followed soon by a backhoe loader and a dump truck. The same set of six equipment is provided also to East New Britain and Western Provinces.

Japan has been contributing to the PNG's national endeavor to upgrade road networks through the provision of road construction equipment as well as the technical cooperation aimed at transferring its technical know-how of road construction and maintenance.

This event was carried out as a part of "the press tour" under which journalists from a total of four newspaper and TV station companies joined the several ceremonies and site visits attended by Ambassador Watanabe. Using the opportunity, the journalists interviewed representatives of DOWH and people of Madang who attended the ceremony.
