Historically, potato and sago palm starch have been the main staple foods in Papua New Guinea, where the rice becomes to be one of the important staple food recently. However, the production of rice in Papua New Guinea isn't enough to afford the demand in PNG. Therefore, PNG is currently depending on the imported rice in certain level. The Japanese Government has been promoting the rice growing under the technical cooperation project by JICA in Madang, East Sepic, Manus and Milne-bay Provinces.
On March 22, Ambassador Watanabe visited a rice milling facility, where the Japanese Government provided some milling machines, and exchanged views with person in charge in local department, and farmers producing rice under the project.
This visit was carried out as a part of "the press tour" under which journalists from a total of four newspaper and TV station companies joined the site visit by Ambassador. The journalist interviewed representatives of local agricultural division or farmers.
